New version of Power BI Report Server now available でアナウンスされていますが、Power BI Report Server の 10 月の更新でサポートされる接続先の制限が大幅に緩和されています。
これにより、ダウンロード可能な Power BI Report Server もバージョンが変更されました。
Microsoft Power BI Report Server – 2017 年 10 月
リリース当初の Power BI Report Server については、次のような制限がありました。
現在、Power BI レポートのサポートされている唯一のデータ ソースは、Analysis Services へのライブ接続 (表形式または多次元) です。 データ ソースは今後のリリースでさらに追加される予定です。
Power BI Report Server の 6 月のリリースでは、Power BI Report Server でサポートされているデータ ソースは、SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) の表形式モデルまたは多次元キューブへのライブ接続だけです。
8 月のプレビュー リリースでは、あらゆるデータ ソースに接続することができます。 データ ソースへの接続の詳細については、こちらをご覧ください。
Power BI Report Server は定期的なアップデートの前に、プレビューが提供されており、8 月のプレビューで制限の緩和が行われました。

2017 年 8 月プレビュー
2017 年 8 月プレビューには、Analysis Services 以外のライブ接続のサポートが含まれています。 これには、インポートされたデータが含まれます。 2017 年 8 月プレビューは powerbi.com でダウンロードできます。
Analysis Services 以外のライブ接続の使用には制限があります。
- 現在のところ、インポートしたデータを利用するレポートでは、データ更新をスケジュールできません。
- DirectQuery データ接続には現在のところ対応していません。
- 公式にはスケールアウト環境に対応していません。
- レポートのサイズは、50 MB 未満にする必要があります。
データをインポートした Power BI Desktop のファイルのアップロードがサポートされました。
これに追加して今回の 10 月のアップデートで、Direct Query ならびに、インポートしたデータのスケジュール更新 (Power BI report scheduled refresh in Power BI Report Server) がサポートされるようになりました。
Direct Query support available for Power BI Reports
For reports that always need to look at the live source data, we’ve added support for Direct Query. Direct Query is enabled in this release for the following data sources ? SQL Server, Azure SQL Database, Oracle, Teradata, SAP HANA and SAP BW. Simply choose the “Direct Query” option when you’re creating your report in Power BI Desktop and load your report to the server. Once loaded, you can set the credentials used when connecting to the data source for report viewers, or if you’d like to connect as the user viewing the report to take advantage of row-level security that’s been set at the data level for certain data sources.

Power BI Reports
Power BI reports can work with data that is imported or using an Analysis Services live connection along with DirectQuery. The October 2017 release includes support for connections other than Analyssi Services live connections. This includes imported data. You can download the October 2017 release over at powerbi.com.

Other reports
Other report types support the same data sources that are present in SQL Server Reporting Services. For more information, see Data sources supported by Reporting Services.

インポートによりキャッシュされたデータについては、一通りサポートされているようですね。
Live Connection / Direct Query については、次のソースがサポートされているようです。

今までは、SQL Server on Linux のデータを Power BI Report Server で参照する場合には、SSAS を挟む必要があったのですが、今回の更新により、SQL Server on Linux のデータを直接読み込めるようになったので、デモがやりやすくなりましたね。
